Blue Coat Hosts Inspiring National Secondary Leaders Network Event

Last week, Blue Coat CofE School Coventry was proud to host the National Secondary Leaders Network, welcoming pupils, school leaders, chaplains and educational partners from across the country for a powerful day centred on hope, community and pupil leadership.

The event, themed Inclusive Community: Becoming Beacons in Your Community, focused on empowering young people to recognise the impact they can have within their schools and wider communities through leadership, reconciliation, worship and service. Throughout the day, pupils explored what it means to become “beacons of hope” by shaping cultures of belonging, compassion and inclusion.

The day began with reflective worship led by the Blue Coat Choir, setting a moving and inspirational tone for the event. Worship and reflection remained central throughout the day, creating space for meaningful conversations around leadership, hope and community.

Mrs Wright of Blue Coat CofE School Coventry reflected on the opening moments of the event, saying:

“I am so proud to host today. It has been such an inspirational morning hearing from our amazing choir and singing together. The worship and reflections throughout the morning really set us up for an inspirational day ahead.”

Pupils and Leaders then took part in a series of workshops exploring worship leadership, reconciliation, navigating difference and civic action. Sessions were led alongside national organisations including the Growing Faith Foundation, the Reconciling Schools Network, FLOURISH and the Archbishop’s Young Leaders Award.

One of the strongest themes throughout the day was the importance of giving young people the confidence and opportunity to lead.

Stephen Beamond, Head of Younger Leaders for the National Society for Education, said:

“Young people should have the space, opportunity and agency to lead and change their world. It’s incredibly exciting to be part of a day that makes that happen.”

Lorraine Prince, Head of Networks at the National Society for Education, added:

“What’s been so powerful today is seeing pupils leading workshops themselves and showing what being a beacon of hope in their community looks like. Young people are saying to adults, ‘let us take charge’, and I think that’s exactly what we should be encouraging.”

A keynote address from Kieran Joseph, Founder and CEO of Guardian Ballers, encouraged leaders to embrace leadership through understanding, compassion and acceptance of difference. His reflections resonated strongly with pupils and staff alike.

Speaking during the event, Kieran said:

“There’s been such a focus on young people being the light in the world. One workshop really stood out to me where young people shared how they overcome a lack of understanding and acceptance of difference. They spoke about wanting to live beautifully different lives.”

Throughout the afternoon, pupils shared personal stories, leadership projects and community initiatives during a student leadership panel, demonstrating the confidence, empathy and sense of purpose that had been nurtured throughout the day.

Many pupils spoke passionately about what they had taken away from the experience.

Ezra, a pupil at Blue Coat CofE School Coventry, said:

“It’s been such a privilege to host today and speak to people about being a beacon of hope. Hearing different speakers and stories throughout the day was really encouraging.”

Jesse, also from Blue Coat, reflected:

“This day has been an amazing opportunity to take part in inspiring workshops and leadership opportunities. I strongly believe that being beacons of hope is what can help change many of the issues we see in society today.”

Across the event, there was a consistent message of optimism, empowerment and hope for the future. April Gold, Director of Education for the Diocese of Coventry, described the impact of seeing young people embrace leadership with confidence:

“Seeing children embrace that, step into leadership and shine with confidence has been such an inspiration. It makes me really excited for the future in their hands.”

The event concluded with further reflection, praise and a commissioning of pupils as “Beacons in Their Communities”, leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved.

Other highlights from the day included pupils sharing stories of charity projects and memorial initiatives, workshops exploring reconciliation and peacebuilding, and discussions around how schools can continue creating inclusive and flourishing communities.

Tobias from Blue Coat reflected:

“My top takeaway from today is that difference is amazing and should always be welcomed.”

Meanwhile, Jacob from Guardian Ballers shared an important message for adults working with young people:

“Take your time with young people, build trust and create relationships where they feel able to talk openly.”

We would like to thank the National Society for Education for entrusting us with hosting such a meaningful and impactful national event. It was a privilege to welcome so many inspiring young leaders, staff and partners together for a day centred on hope, community and pupil leadership, and one that the staff and students attending will not forget for a long time.
