Curriculum Intent

Our core vision at Blue Coat is ‘Living Life in its Fullness’, which encourages all members of the school community to reach their potential in everything they do. Therefore, our curriculum intent is to provide a high-quality science education in the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the future challenges that the world will face (servanthood), so all pupils will be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science to make a positive impact on the wider world. Through building up a body of key knowledge and concepts (hard work), pupils will be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They will be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

Pupils will be encouraged to understand that science is about working objectively, showing respect for other views (care and respect), and modifying explanations to take account of new evidence and subjecting results to peer review (togetherness) to make them well rounded learners. Pupils will become more confident in deciding on the appropriate type of scientific enquiry to undertake to answer their own questions and develop a deeper understanding of factors to be considered when collecting, recording and processing data (integrity). They will learn to evaluate their results using key scientific vocabulary and identify further questions arising from them.
